Short Mat News
Horsham Hotshots short mat bowls finished second in North East Division 2 league and are promoted to Division 1 in only their second full season at league level.
Sunday 23rd April saw the Short Mat Finals take place. At stake were the Redwood Trophy knockout singles, Championship Pairs and Championship Singles trophies.
In the morning, the Championship Singles competition saw Roy Pretty take on Anna Bishop with the winner being the first to score 21 points. After a terse struggle, Roy was successful by 21-15. Later, Roy Pretty was back contesting the Redwood Trophy knockout singles competition. Roy again showed his mastery of the mat, taking an early lead against Mike Wilson by 15-4. Some keenly fought ends followed with Mike taking a 4 to get to 18-9. But the wily Roy completed the game 22-9, with a 4 himself.
Meanwhile, the Championship Pairs competition was taking much longer. Anna Bishop and Dave Marden played Terry Comper and Kelly McCartney in a close encounter over 21 ends. Every end seemed tight, often seeing only one point being scored with 16 woods on each end. After 10 ends, the score was 9-7 with Anna and Dave just ahead. Tension mounted as after 13 ends the score was 10-10, then after 15 ends it was 12-12! But after 19 ends, with Anna and Dave up 17-14, they scored a 5, leaving Terry and Kelly needing all 8 to draw on the last end. The final score was 23-14 to Anna Bishop and Dave Marden.
It was a super finish to a successful season indoors on short mat.
